“I am happy to share my story about swimming, I was an overweight kid all through childhood. I swam at least two hours a day at Mount hood, Barlow or my aunt’s outdoor pool. Though I exercised and dieted I remained a bigger kid but a pretty stout kid from all the swimming. I didn’t let that stop me from swimming and was one of the best swimmers on my team (Mount Hood swim team for youths). In 1989, I swam in a few events at the State Games and my relay team received several medals. I have the medals I received locked away in a trunk, a proud grandmother insisted on holding them for me and I got them back when she passed. This was a great outlet for me because I also struggled in school having a learning disability (dyslexia) I went to a small school in Troutdale that really didn’t have the resources for tutors or one-on- one help.”
